Zune(WP7) Software on the Mac…Not so fast

The number of Mac users who will use the new Windows Phone 7 is probably a small number. The number of users who will like the platform, but won’t admit it, is probably even greater. However, the need for a piece of software which will allow Apple users to connect their WP7 to their Macintosh is still necessary, but Microsoft has been silent if not almost elusive on the subject of Mac compatibility.

Then yesterday, a Microsoft employee tweeted that there would be software for the Mac to allow syncing to the phone:
DAILY #WP7 ANNOUNCEMENT: I’m glad to confirm that Mac users would be able to use Zune on their Macs to sync with #WP7. More details soon.
The tweet was deleted soon after, so I imagine that this was not news Microsoft wanted to share with the world. What Microsoft has officially stated on the Mac Windows Phone 7 software is:
Later in 2010 Microsoft will make a public beta available of a tool that allows Windows Phone 7 to sync select content with Mac computers.
While the earlier tweet says that “Mac users would be able to use Zune…”, past statements from Microsoft have alluded that there will be a more basic syncing tool, but not the entire Zune PC platform available on the Mac. No one, outside of Microsoft, can/will confirm what will be coming to the Mac for use with WP7, but there is definitely something in the pipeline.

While it may admittedly be a small user base that will use a WP7 device with their Macs, the need for this software is necessary to remain open to all users, no matter their OS choice. I’d like to see the full Zune PC software, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up Apple guys.
