Henry Ford once remarked about following the advice of his customers, and he supposedly said, “If I followed the advice of my customers, they would have said, we want a faster horse. And I wouldn’t be here.” I don’t know if that is true or not, but apparently the automobile industry, after the debacle of the last few years, has decided that it needs to stop listening to customers and to offer new technologies, and not just offer more horsepower.

To that end, Automotive 7 will be offered in newer cars.

The system includes several new features that should drastically enhance the driving experience, including speech recognition operations, touch screen controls, hands-free Bluetooth, and perhaps most unique of all, entertainment and information options ranging from satellite maps to music and third-party applications.

Tools for Automotive 7

The use of a Windows 7 variant in automobiles is part of a push for in-car information and entertainment features at the touch of a button.

Silverlight will be a key part of the Automotive platform for Windows Embedded. It will help car makers produce applications employing two and three-dimensional graphics. Some of these features that could figure in a new wave of highway navigation products.

Another tool is the Tellme speech recognition technology. It is expected to be a part of the Windows Embedded system in automotives, and it will recognize a range of different languages, including American English, UK English, German, Mexican Spanish, continental European Spanish, French-Canadian and continental French and Korean.

Windows 7 Embedded - Different Versions

The first vehicle to use Windows Embedded Automotive 7 will be the 2011 Nissan Leaf electric car.  While Automotive 7 will have many features familiar to Windows 7, it will be a unique OS for a unique product.
