Google has announced that it will phasing out the support for Internet Explorer 6 from 1 March 2010 whereas this decision is taken after the cyber attacks on Google search engine.
Google said that key functionality of Docs, Calendar, Gmail and Sites will stop working anymore with the old version of Internet Explorer 6 and these mentioned applications will only work with Microsoft IE 7+, Mozilla Firefox 3.0+, Google Chrome 4.0+ and Safari 3.0+.
According to Google:
“The web has evolved in the last ten years, from simple text pages to rich, interactive applications including video and voice. Unfortunately, very old browsers cannot run many of these new features effectively.”
Even though about 20% net users are working over IE6 but according to IE6 No More Campaign which is supported by more than 70 web firms, this old version of Microsoft web browser does not meet the standards of modern web technology so there is no reason for its existence any more.
Although Microsoft has admitted the IE6 vulnerability issue since September 2009 and announced the release of patch to fix the problem in February 2010. But the announcement of Google to stop the support to IE6 will obviously give a boost to other rival web browsers of Microsoft especially to Mozilla Firefox which is close near to Microsoft IE in the top browser list and stands at second place whereas in some countries of world it has over taken Internet Explorer as a web browser and recently it has released the latest version Firefox 3.6.
